The AASG Spring Conference was held March 20-22 at Thunder Mountain High School in Juneau, and everyone agrees it was a huge success! The conference was even front page news in the Juneau Empire for two days running.
Nearly 300 students representing schools statewide attended the conference, which included a full interactive tour of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration facility, workshops hosted by Alaska legislators, a performance from the school’s production of The Beauty and the Beast, a presentation from Dr. Rosita Worl, President of the Sealaska Heritage Institute along with many fun and exciting social activities.
Elections were also held during the conference. New AASG Executive Board members include President Hunter Carter from Bethel, Vice-president Kyle Hasse from Mat-Su, Public Relations Officer RJ Roy from Kodiak, Secretary Alyssa Mandich from West Valley, Treasurer Kali Spencer from Eagle River, Parliamentarian Drake Fallais from Mat-Su, and two new regional representatives – Klajvis Pellumbi from Bethel representing Region One and Kara Whitehead from Skagway representing Region Five. Congratulations and welcome to our new board members and their advisers.
Our Spring 2018 Conference will be hosted by Tri-Valley School in Healy April 26-28, 2018. Unfortunately here is still no host school for the Fall 2017 conference. AASG is hoping that a school or region will come forward to host the conference.
Conferences are an exciting opportunity for both the students that attend and the schools that host them.
Past conference hosts Anthony Jensen (Wasilla High), Danielle Lewis (Eagle River High), Elizabeth Bender and Lindsey Glenn (Kodiak High), Barbara Petukh Jackson (Mat-Su Career Tech), and Mara Sheakley-Early (Thunder Mountain High) are available to lend support and guidance in your decision to become a conference host school. Host schools will also have the support of the AASG executive board. Our parent organization, the Alaska School Activities Association, has also agreed to forward-fund a portion of your conference, which will help with many of the up-front costs of the conference.
Please go to the conference page on our website for more information and the application forms to host our Fall 2017 or Fall 2018 AASG statewide conferences.
